The North Queens Community School student plays basketball, softball and competes in track and field

“I like that it helps me health wise, I don’t get sick,” Smith says.

The Grade 12 plays competes both basketball and track and field - sprinting, shot put and javelin – and he says the sports compliment each other and help him become a better athlete.

Smith says basketball helps build up his endurance, which helps him with track and field.

Caledonia is a small community, but a very close one, and Smith says that his teams are no exception.

“We’re all very close, we’re all friends, we check up on each other all the time,” he says.

Smith also enjoys coaching younger players with a program named after Steve Nash. North Queens doesn’t have a basketball team for students before Grade 7, so the program helps younger students get into the sport.

The program provides supplies, as well as direction on motivation and learning basketball.

Smith is looking forward to seeing some of the children he coaches progress through the school system and become better players.

“I’ll be able to say ‘oh yeah, I helped them get there,’ which would be pretty cool,” says Smith.

Like many youth from North Queens, Smith has some involvement in the farming lifestyle. He works at the Queens County Fair in the summer.

After graduating, Smith is thinking about joining the RCMP. Keeping fit and healthy will help him on that road.
