It took a finish they're probably still talking about, but Mason Foote cemented his reputation as the Fastest Boy in Nova Scotia with a double gold-medal performance at NSSAF track and field provincials in Sackville.

After winning the 100 metre race June 1 in a relatively slow time of 11.08 seconds (his district record is 10.84), Foote ran the 200 metres June 2. Halfway through the race, the Grade 12 NKEC student trailed Jonathan Campbell of Lockview by close to five metres, but managed to make up the deficit and win by 0.02 seconds: 22.39 to Campbell's 22.41 in one of the closest races of the meet.

Foote's two provincial championships highlighted a fine performance by Kings County athletes that included 22 medals, 11 of them gold.

Marissa Walter of Central Kings continued her dominance in the intermediate girls' short distance races, winning the 100 metres in 12.34 seconds June 1. Her time earned her a share of the provincial record for an electronically-timed race on a synthetic track.

June 2, Walter won the 200 metres in a time of 25.70, and also anchored her team to gold in the 4X100 relay ( in a time of 52.21) and silver in the 4X400 relay. Chantal Landry, Lauren Landry and Alana Fairfax joined Walter on the victorious 4X100 team, and Chantal Landry also earned a bronze medal in the 400 metres. Their overall results earned C.K. third place in the intermediate girls' team standings with 78 points.

In junior boys, Brandon Patterson of Central Kings, winner of four events at regionals, won the 200 in a time of 25.44 after finishing second by just 0.02 seconds in the 100. Patterson also won bronze in the high jump and was fourth in the pole vault.

Also in junior boys, Iain MacMillan of Coldbrook won bronze in the hurdles, teammates Mitch Getson was third in both the discus and javelin, and Andrew Jennings-Lindsay won bronze in the shot put, helping Coldbrook to third in the team standings.

In junior girls, Stacy Burgess of Coldbrook, a silver medalist in the javelin at regionals, won bronze with a personal best throw of 30.99 metres, more than two metres better than her regional result.

In intermediate girls', in addition to the Central Kings performance, Christine Manning of NKEC won silver in the pole vault, edging out her teammate Kaleigh Wolodka, the regional silver medalist who settled for bronze. Abbey Duinker of Horton won silver in the intermediate girls' discus and bronze in the javelin.

In senior girls, Taya McGillivary of Port Williams and Kings-Edgehill won the shot put with a personal best throw of 10.29 metres, and also anchored her team to gold in the 4X100 relay.

The Horton team of Jane Snyder, Lori Milne, Jenna Stirling and Acacia Dunphy won gold in the 4X400 relay in a time of 4:28.81, a time almost 10 seconds faster than their impressive victory at regionals.

Emma Duinker of Horton won the discus with a throw of 32.34 metres and was second in the javelin. Horton placed fourth overall in the senior girls' team standings.

Katrina Morse of NKEC seemed poised to win the senior girls' triple jump after a personal best result of 10.19 metres, but, on her final jump, Rebecca Bell of Park View jumped 10.20 to snatch gold from Morse's grasp by the narrowest of margins.

In addition to the medal winners, a number of Kings County athletes turned in excellent performances in their events, despite falling short of a spot on the podium.

In junior girls’, Hilary Rawding of Pine Ridge was fourth in the 3,000 metres, and Rhianna Nicholson of KCA was fourth in the shot put. In junior boys, George Bitar of Coldbrook was fourth in the discus.

In intermediate girls, Britany MacArthur of NKEC was fourth in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres in a somewhat disappointing performance for her after sweeping all three events at both districts and regionals. In intermediate boys’, Dustin Poirier of Central Kings was fourth in the javelin and fifth in the high jump.

In senior girls’, Horton was fourth in the 4X100 relay, and Amy Smith of Horton was fourth in the pole vault with a personal best result of 2.15 metres. Joe Harvey of Horton was fourth in senior boys' hurdles and fifth in the 200 metres.
