Canada Games: Kings County athletes competing in curling, hockey, squash and snowboard at Canada Games Feb. 24

Nova Scotia kicked off competition with a 9-7 win over Newfoundland, then picked up a 11-4 win over Alberta later in the day. The two wins left Nova Scotia tied with Manitoba for first in pool B of competition.

Competition will resume Feb. 24 with a match against the unbeaten Manitoba rink at 2:05 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time and again at 8 p.m. AST against Quebec, which had a 1-1 record after the first day of play.

In hockey action, Team Nova Scotia lost a hard-fought battle to Alberta 5-4. Kingston resident Cole Rafuse opened scoring for Nova Scotia with a goal with one second left on the clock in the first period. Although Nova Scotia battled back and pulled the goalie in the last minute of play, they were unable to tie things up and force overtime.

Nova Scotia is still seeking its first men’s hockey win with an 0-2 record leading into action on Feb. 24. Nova Scotia will face off against Team Saskatchewan, which is also still seeking its first win, at 8 p.m. AST.

Greenwood’s Alex Robert, who skated his short program in the singles pre-novice male Feb. 23, earned 18.79 points. He will skate in the free program on Feb. 25.

Squash action continued for Team Nova Scotia Feb. 23, with Kentville’s Taylor Kosciukiewicz  on the female team. The team lost to Ontario, but will be back in action Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. against Manitoba. Hantsport’s Nick Sangster, who trains with the Kings County squash team, competed in the male team squash competition, which saw Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories each with two of the four matches for a 2-2 tie. Nova Scotia will next face Ontario at 3:30 p.m. AST.

In other action for Kings County athletes Feb. 24, snowboard competition will get underway at 2:30 p.m. Adam Steeves of Wolfville will make his qualification run in the parallel giant slalom male.
