On May 28, Avon View's senior girls tier 1 team took on King's-Edgehill School in the Western Region rugby championship final and won 12-8.

“It's always nice to beat the crosstown rivals,” said Jim Bryan, the Avalanche's head coach following the big win.

“People have had a hard time scoring on us all year, so we knew all we needed was about 12 or 13 points and we probably would have been fine,” said Bryan. “They got 12... it seemed safe at the time. It could have gone either way.”

Scoring tries for Avon View were Sophie Parker and Sam Lake. Natalie Rippey kicked the conversion.

Scoring for King's-Edgehill was Anna Killacky with a try and penalty kick.

“I congratulate King's-Edgehill on a well-fought game. They've improved all year and they gave us all we could handle. It could easily have gone the other way,” said Bryan.

Although the Avalanche were down in numbers since the start of the season – they had about 19 players for the final – Bryan commended the team on working together to fight for the win.

“The girls worked really hard and even though we were against the wind in the second half, they were coming on strong. They held it up,” said Bryan.

“Our three captains, they held it together all year,” he noted.

Lake, Brittany Mackinnon, and Jaclyn Silver “were always key for us” he said, and noted that Parker and Kia Sawler were great playmakers.

“I'm just really happy for them because they worked hard and it means a lot to them. It's nice to see them succeed.”

Both teams will advance to the provincials next week. Although Avon View is a strong contender to win the title, Bryan said they've got to work hard if they hope to win.

“I'm always telling them the best team doesn't always win,” said Bryan. “Just because you're first doesn't mean anything.”

Bryan said the city-based teams don't appear to be as strong as they have been in the past provincials. However, the Northumberland teams are looking to be quite challenging.

Provincials will be held June 5-6.
