Calling all organizers and operators of club sport: add a regional Sport Summit, set for Sept. 25 in Middleton, to your calendar.

According to organizer Angela Morrison, Sport Nova Scotia community sport development co-ordinator for the Valley region, the summit will be “a great opportunity for people to learn things that will improve their club sports.”

Scheduled for Sept. 25 at Middleton High School, the event will include breakout sessions on topics including coaching, volunteer recruitment and retention, inclusive and adaptive sport, gender equity, officiating, fundraising, physical literacy and grass-roots programming.

The keynote address will be delivered by Jacqueline Foster of CTV News Atlantic, a Bridgetown-area native and a competitive lawn bowler.

The event is being offered at no cost to participants, with the costs being covered by Sport Nova Scotia and the other event partners.

The summit is part of Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L), a federal initiative dedicated to improving the quality of sport and physical activity in Canada. CS4L links sport, education, recreation and health by aligning community, provincial and national programming.

According to Morrison, there are three main areas of the provincial plan – “mobilization, long-term athlete development and alignment, and collaboration” – all of which will be touched on at the summit.

The Sept. 25 summit will be made up of two streams, she said.

“One will benefit coaches and the other club administrators and organizers,” Morrison explained.

“We’re expecting to attract club sport coaches and organizers and school sport coaches and administrators, as well as recreation directors and their staff from the various municipal units. If you’re running a sports club, in any sector, there will be something there to help you.”

Morrison says there are several ways to register, including online at http://discovermiddleton.ca/surveys/index.php/survey/index/sid/671131/newtest/Y/lang/en.
