It should be a happening weekend for girls’ basketball when Central Kings hosts the 2014 Gator Classic Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
This year’s tournament is bigger than in past years, with a total of 20 teams taking part – 12 D-1 or D-2 teams plus, for the first time, an eight-team JV division.
Due to its size, the tournament will utilize three different gyms: the main and junior gyms at CK, plus the gym at Northeast Kings in Canning. The schedule is set up so that three games will be played at any one time.
The D-1 and D-2 teams will play in the White Division, which is divided into four pools: Pool 1 – Central Kings, Springhill, Millwood; Pool 2 – NKEC, Cole Harbour, Sackville; Pool 3 – Yarmouth, Avon View, Citadel; Pool 4 – North Nova, Middleton, West Kings.
The eight JV teams – Central Kings JV, Horton JV, Lockeport, J.L. Ilsley, Citadel JV, C.P. Allen JV, AWEC and Barrington – will play in the Green Division. All 20 teams are guaranteed at least three games.
“We are very proud of our parent organizing team,” CK girls’ head coach Ben Hachey said. “For three years now, we have seen the classic get bigger and bigger, and it is mostly due to the efforts of these parents.”
Hachey said they started out trying to make a competitive event that brought teams from as wide a range as possible, and then have added to it each year.
“As we have a Junior Varsity team for the first time this season, we wanted to offer them a place in the tournament as well. This led to inviting more teams, and somehow it grew to 20,” he said.
The size of the tournament, he said, is “something all involved are proud of.”
Hachey also cited CK senior high athletic director Lloyd Boutilier, who has been generous and supportive, and NKEC athletic director Dave Morton, for allowing the use of the gym at his school “so we could fit in 31 games over two days.”
Hachey said it was “quite possible” the tournament might be even bigger next year. “I’m very aware of the quality of girls’ basketball in the Valley,” he said, “and giving our local high schools the chance to play teams they normally wouldn’t have a chance to see is a great experience for them. We are hoping to attract teams from out of province next year as well.”
