NKEC tops host CK 68-62 in third-place game
The North Nova Gryphons from New Glasgow went undefeated at 3-0 to capture the annual Gators Basketball Festival Jan. 10-11 at Central Kings.
Bridgewater, North Nova, East Antigonish, NKEC and Kings-Edgehill joined the host Gators in the two-day, six-team tournament.
In round robin action, Central Kings opened with a 74-63 win over Bridgewater in front of a good crowd, including many students who appreciated the 2 p.m. start and the opportunity to watch.
Brian Sawler led the way with 26 points for CK. Jonah Lescheid added 21 points and eight rebounds, and Coleton Oickle contributed 19 points.
Tomaz Fougere had 17 points and Zach Dowe 14 for Bridgewater.
In the second game, Kings-Edgehill outscored NKEC 57-47. Ting-Lin Pan had 24 points for Kings-Edgehill, while John Hodder led the Titans with 12.
Following a minor basketball scrimmage featuring players from Kings Minor Basketball, North Nova took on Central Kings and won 63-58.
Campbell DeMont led all scorers with 30 points for North Nova, and Daniel Johnson added 21. For the Gators, Lescheid had 19 points and 17 rebounds, Oickle 17 points and eight boards, and Sawler 15 points.
In the final game of the evening, East Antigonish topped Kings-Edgehill 74-46. Kendell Breen had a huge game for North Nova with 47 points, while Adrian Danquah finished with 14 to lead Kings-Edgehill.
Action resumed Saturday morning with a pair of games at 10 a.m. In the main gym, North Nova topped Bridgewater 77-51 to clinch top spot in their pool. Conner MacGillivray had 17 for North Nova, and Dowe led Bridgewater with nine.
At the same time in the auxiliary gym, NKEC outlasted East Antigonish 85-80 in overtime. Dre Medicraft paced NKEC with 20 points, while Breen had 31 for East Antigonish to lead all scorers.
Following two-ball and three-point competitions, Kings-Edgehill and Bridgewater met in the fifth-place game. Kings-Edgehill was clicking on all cylinders and scored a 102-59 victory.
Hsiu-Cheng Lin had 29 points for Kings-Edgehill. Dowe had 17 to pace Bridgewater.
The third-place game was an all-Valley match-up featuring NKEC and Central Kings. The Titans got off to an 11-0 start, but CK came back and trailed by only one, 30-29 at halftime. The second half was entertaining, with NKEC holding on for a 68-62 win.
Medicraft had 29 for NKEC to lead all scorers. Lescheid had another strong game for the Gators with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Oickle added 12 points and Isaiah Crossland-Belle nine rebounds.
In the final, the leading scorers were Breen with 17 points and Kyle Boudreau with 14 for East Antigonish, and DeMont and Liam Spears leading a balanced North Nova attack with 14 points each. DeMont was chosen as the winner of the Stan MacVicar Tournament MVP Award.
