KINGS COUNTY - Six local teens will soon have a chance to tour Europe while playing the sport they love.
Jensen Jodrey, Kameron Kinsman, Sam Oulton, Colby Lewis, Daeden Comeau and Tristan Wagner have been selected to join a provincial midget hockey team slated to play a series of exhibition games in France, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic in July 2018.
But first, they have some fund raising to do.
There will be a spaghetti supper and silent auction fundraiser in support of the players participating in the Western Europe 2018 Hockey Tour Nov. 25 at the New Minas Fire Hall from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Both Jodrey and Kinsman have been playing hockey for nine years.
Jodrey, a resident of Canning, also plays centre for the NKEC Titans hockey team. He was invited to play for the team bound for Europe after attending a hockey came in the United States.
The 15-year-old says he was interested in seizing the “opportunity to travel and meet different people with the same interest in hockey.”
He looks forward to experiencing a faster game played on a larger ice surface in Europe, and touring the towns they'll be visiting along the way.
First and foremost, Jodrey says he plays hockey for fun. And he suspects the Europe trip will be no exception.
“I have met many friends through playing hockey.”
The young athletes must try to raise about $5,000 before embarking on the tour.
Kinsman will be representing Nova Scotia between the pipes when his team takes the ice in Europe.
The 15-year-old goaltender, also hailing from Canning, is looking forward to his first trip outside of Canada.
“I am not sure what the hockey rules are there, but I expect to play harder games and face harder shots on me,” he says.
