LIVERPOOL, NS - “Our club is steadily improving week to week,” says Shawn Woodworth, head coach of the O'Regan's Subaru Western Hurricanes hockey team.
This past weekend the team had a bit of a setback with a game against the Truro Bearcats. Woodworth says Truro jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period, which ended in a 4-2 victory over the Hurricanes.
“The Hurricanes battled back to 3-2 late in the third by goals from Konnor Benjamin and Lawson Cook but gave up their second short handed goal of the game and could not find their way back in the game,” says Woodworth.
The team would have liked to have had a better start to their game against Truro as they fell behind 3-0 early in the game, but Woodworth says the boys battled hard. He says they will use this game as a valuable learning tool as they have to be mentally prepared long before the puck drops.
“We came with a much better mindset on Sunday in the game versus Bedford,” says Woodworth. “And it paid dividends, as we held Bedford to a single goal.”
The team came away with a 3-1 win. Woodworth says Jeremy Charles was stingy in net, only allowing one goal on 24 shots, while Benjamin paced the Hurricanes with two goals and an assist while Luke Woodworth added the game-winning goal on the power play.
Woodworth says the team wants to continue to add up points early in the season because points become tougher and tougher as the season moves to the back half.
The Hurricanes were on the road on Oct. 21 versus the Wear Well Bombers in New Glasgow and in Tantallon to face the first place Gulls on Sunday October 22.
