GREENWICH, NS - The Horton Griffins girls’ basketball team will host the third annual CBI Kings Physio Eastern Canadian Classic Basketball Tournament this weekend in Greenwich.

The tournament will feature top teams from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador. The emerging Halifax West Warriors will be joined by one of Nova Scotia’s strongest teams, the Dartmouth High Spartans. New Brunswick squads include a powerful Kennebecasis Valley Crusaders and a rebuilding and youthful Sussex Sonics. The St. Kevin’s Mavericks represent Newfoundland.

The Griffins enter their home tournament with a 13-2 overall record, after winning tournaments at CP Allen and Charlottetown. The team went 3-1 in Moncton last week, missing out on a semi-final appearance by one point.

The Griffins will open the event; hosting St. Kevin’s on Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. in a spirit game. They take to the floor again at 5:40 p.m. against Sussex, who they played in Charlottetown two weeks ago. While the Griffins don’t know much about the St. Kevin’s Mavericks, they are well aware of the outside shooting prowess of the Sussex Sonics.

Sara Cumby and Hannah Fuller, both grade elevens, have led the Griffins as consistent leading scorers so far this season. Playoff games are scheduled for Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. for fifth place; 3 p.m. for the bronze; and the championship game slated for 5 p.m. Tournament passes are $5 and day passes are $3.
