Yarmouth will be one of seven teams competing at provincials – the other six teams being Acadia, Cape Breton West, Bedford, TASA, East Hants and the host Halifax. Games are being played at the Centennial Arena in Halifax.

The Yarmouth squad – which plays out of the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association and competed in the Nova Scotia Peewee AAA Mainland League this season – qualified for provincials following a very strong showing at the league’s championship tournament earlier this month in Antigonish.

At that tournament Yarmouth had three wins and a tie in the round robin, then won the semi-final, which qualified it for provincials. The team fell short in the league championship title game to Acadia, which had been the first-place team in the league throughout the season. Acadia had only lost one of 20 regular season games, which was a 2-1 loss to Yarmouth. The Yarmouth Mariners finished their league season in third place out of six teams in the league.

The peewee AAA Mariners team is made up of players from Yarmouth and Shelburne counties, along with Clare. Team head coach John D’Arcy is pleased with the team’s performance heading into provincials.

“We had a great finish to our regular season.  From Day 1 our goal was to qualify for the provincials,” he says. “I am very proud of the boys for accomplishing that. Now the mission is to reset our focus and continue to play well at the provincials.”

Hockey Nova Scotia provincial results will be posted here.

Yarmouth's provincials round robin schedule:

• Thursday: noon vs Acadia

• Thursday: 6 p.m. vs TASA

• Friday: 10 a.m. vs Bedford

• Friday: 4 p.m. vs Bedford

This is the first season that changes introduced by Hockey Nova Scotia regarding provincials are occurring. Unlike previous years when there were multi-day provincial tournaments at all levels of minor hockey, now such provincial tournaments only occur at the peewee AAA, bantam AA and midget AA levels.

All other minor hockey levels will compete in a Day of Champions weekend March 28 and 29 in Bedford. Each game involved the two top teams from the north and south parts of the province.
