Windsor Council proclaims Friday, Jan. 29 as Hockey Heritage Day.

UPDATE:

A statement from the town of Windsor said "Due to the pending storm, the provincial announcement scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29 has been postponed to Saturday, January 30 at noon, now as part of the opening ceremonies of the Long Pond Heritage Classic at the Dill Family Farm."

The community celebration that was scheduled for Friday evening has also been postponed and a future date will be announced.

The Long Pond Heritage Classic is still scheduled to begin on Saturday morning at 9 am, and will conclude around 2:30 pm

Windsor Mayor Paul Beazley made the Hockey Heritage Day declaration during Windsor council's meeting on Jan. 27, while councillors and some staff were decked out in hockey jerseys.

“The Province of Nova Scotia will officially recognize Nova Scotia’s proud hockey heritage at a celebration on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016,” Beazley said, reading the official proclamation. “The significance of the province recognizing Nova Scotia’s hockey history, from Long Pond, the Cradle of Hockey, and the evolution of the game to the world.”

The proclamation also encourages all Windsor and West Hants residents to support and participate in the events planned for Hockey Heritage Day at Long Pond.

Beazley also recommended that people wear their favourite hockey sweaters.

Details on what will be announced regarding the Birthplace of Hockey Arena have not been announced, but some have speculated that it could involve a funding announcement for the new sport facility.

Hockey legend Guy Lafleur will be making appearances around Windsor throughout the weekend.
