Southwest Thunder Peewee Major AAA wins Atlantic Hockey Group New Brunswick Cup

MONCTON – The Southwest Thunder Peewee Major AAA team went undefeated in five games in Moncton over the April 24-26 weekend to win the Atlantic Hockey Group New Brunswick Cup.

The Thunder team, which is made up of players from Yarmouth County, Clare and the Bridgewater area, along with one player from the valley, got off to a strong start, winning it’s first game 10-2 against the Cape Breton Cyclones after scoring its first goal 13 seconds into the game.

Scoring for Thunder, each with a pair of goals, were Ben Charles, Justin Surette, Leon Bouchard, Mason Beck and Rylan Mayo. Adding assists were Leon Bouchard (2), Mario Boudreau (2), Tyler Cross (3), Jaden Watkins, Justin Surette, Joe Parsons and Logan Nauss.

Jeremy Charles was in net and was selected as player of the game.

In their second game, played against the Cape Breton Freeze, Thunder had a 6-2 win. Once again Thunder set the pace quickly, scoring 42 seconds into the game.

Scoring for Thunder in the win were Leon Bouchard (2), Mario Boudreau, Ben Charles, Joe Parsons and Justin Surette. Adding assists were Rylan Mayo (3), Leon Bouchard, Mario Boudreau, Tyler Cross (2), Ben Charles, Joe Parsons, Max Nickerson and Justin Surette.

Cody Rennehan was in net. Leon Bouchard was named player of the game.

In their third game the Thunder had a 6-0 shutout over the Lynx of northern New Brunswick. Scoring for Thunder was Justin Surette with a hat-trick, along with Ben Charles, Mason Beck and Joe Parsons. Adding assists were Jaden Watkins, Leon Bouchard (2), Mario Boudreau, Justin Surette, Joe Parsons, Zack LeBlanc and Logan Nauss. Cody Rennehan had the shutout in net. Justin Surette was named player of the game.

In a game between the Thunder and the Heat of Halifax, neither team wasted any time scoring. The scored was tied 1-1 after 32 seconds of play. The score was later tied 2-2 at the end of the first period but Thunder went on to score seven unanswered goals in the second and third periods for the 9-2 win.

Scoring for Thunder were Ben Charles (2), Leon Bouchard (2), Mario Boudreau (2), Rylan Mayo, Joe Parsons and Mason Beck. Adding assists were Ben Charles (2), Justin Surette, Evan Saulnier, Mason Beck and Zack LeBlanc.

Jeremy Charles was in net. Player of the game was Ben Charles.

Southwest Thunder finished the round robin portion of the tournament in first place amongst seven teams. Thunder was the only team to go undefeated in the round robin.

In the championship game Thunder played the Vipers of New Brunswick. It was a scoreless contest until 13:29 in the third period when Ben Charles, assisted by Max Nickerson and Mario Boudreau scored on the powerplay. Two minutes later Justin Surette, assisted by Mario Boudreau, extended the lead to 2-0, which was the final score of the gold medal final.

Southwest Thunder will play in two more tournaments during their spring season. The team will be in Summerside, PEI May 8-10 and in New Glasgow May 22-24.
