Regionals this weekend for Western Region boys' high school hockey teams

BERWICK - Boys’ high school hockey teams in the Western Region are preparing to do battle in their regional championships this weekend.

After all playing in the Valley High School Hockey League all season, the Western Region boys’ teams split into their respective NSSAF divisions for regionals.

Avon View and Park View are competing in Division 1, with the winner of a head-to-head series advancing to provincials hosted by North Nova in Pictou County.

NKEC, Central Kings, West Kings, Horton, Yarmouth and Barrington, seeded in that order, are taking part in the D-2 boys’ regionals March 8-9 in Berwick. Barrington defeated Bridgewater to earn the sixth and final berth on the tournament.

Action gets underway at 1 p.m. March 8, with Central Kings, the tournament host, taking on Yarmouth. Following that, Horton meets Barrington at 2:40 p.m., and Yarmouth takes on West Kings at 4:20.

The final three games of the day are Barrington versus NKEC at 6 p.m., West Kings versus Central Kings at 7:40 and Horton versus NKEC at 9:20.

On March 9, the crossovers will take place in the morning, with the third-place team in Pool A meeting the second-place team in Pool B at 9 a.m., and third in Pool B meeting second in Pool A at 10:40.

The first-place teams in both pools meet at 1:50 p.m., with the winners of the crossover games playing at 3:30 p.m. Both the first-place teams earn a berth at provincials, as does the winner of the game between the crossover winners.

Eastern Shore Regional High is hosting the D-2 boys’ provincials.

The D-3 regionals are being hosted by Ecole Par en Bas in Yarmouth Mar. 6-7. Participating teams include Digby, Bridgetown, Forest Heights and the host Par en Bas squad. Forest Heights is hosting the D-3 boys’ provincials.

Meanwhile, the D-2 girls’ regionals were played March 2-3 in Middleton, with Yarmouth, Horton, Middleton, West Kings, Bridgetown, NKEC, Par en Bas and Central Kings taking part.

Yarmouth won the regional banner, finishing with a 4-0 record and defeating Middleton 5-1 in the regional final.

Middleton also advanced to provincials along with Horton and Bridgetown, as well as West Kings, which will be hosting the D-2 girls’ provincials.

Tournament scores included Middleton 2 Horton 1, NKEC 4 Par en Bas 3 in overtime, West Kings 4 Bridgetown 1, NKEC 3 Middleton 1, Yarmouth 8 CK 0, Horton 3 Par en Bas 1, Yarmouth 4 Bridgetown 3 in overtime, Middleton 3 Par en Bas 1, Horton 3 NKEC 0, Yarmouth 3 West Kings 1, and Bridgetown 5 CK 1.

Yarmouth topped Middleton 5-1 in the regional final, and Bridgetown edged NKEC 3-2 in a game to determine the final provincial qualifier from the region.

The Valley High School Hockey League boys’ division championship was played March 4 in Kentville, with Park View, Par en Bas, Forest Heights and Avon View, the top four teams in the league’s regular season standings, making up the field.

In the first semifinal, Par en Bas nipped Avon View 8-7 on Alexander Shaw’s goal with 1:59 remaining in overtime.

Sam Moses had a pair of goals for Par en Bas in regulation time. Peter MacDougall and Tyler LaPierre each had a pair of goals for Avon View.

Par en Bas led 5-1 after one period and 6-4 at the end of the second, and led 7-5 in the third period before Avon View came back to tie the score and force OT.

In the second semifinal, Forest Heights topped Park View 5-1 to join Par en Bas in the final. Jeff Pierce, Connor Nauss, Mark Jollimore, Alex Miller and Cole Mulrooney had single goals for Forest Heights, which led 1-0 after one period and 5-0 after two. Dyson Wood had the only Park View goal in the third period.

The final saw Par en Bas skate to a 7-1 win over Forest Heights. Joel Cottreau and Cameron Jacquard each had a pair of goals for Par en Bas to lead their team to the league championship, which has no bearing on regionals or provincials.
