Northeast Kings Titans win regionals championship with 3-2 overtime win over Yarmouth Vikings

BERWICK – The Northeast Kings (NKEC) Titans edged the Yarmouth Vikings 3-2 in overtime of the championship game of Division 2 high school regionals on Monday, March 9.

Both teams, however, will represent the western region at Division 2 high school provincials March 27-29 in Eastern Shore. Also advancing to provincials from the regionals tournament held March 8 and 9 in Berwick is the Central Kings Gators team, which finished third in regionals.

In the championship game the Northeast Kings team, which had been seeded first in the tournament, was first on the scoreboard, with Luke Russell (Logan Bishop, Dyton Blackett) scoring for the Titans at 11:14 in the first period. Yarmouth, which went into regionals seeded fifth, tied things up on a goal by Brayden Donaldson (Steven Moore) shortly thereafter at 9:10 in the first period.

Yarmouth then took the lead on a goal off the stick of Thomas Surette (Brad Jones) at 9:08 in the second period.

With 2:26 remaining in the second period the Titans tied things up 2-2 with a goal by Griffin Abbott (Riley Matheson, Justin Allen).

When these two teams had met during the regular league season NKEC had easily outplayed the Vikings, winning those contests 10-1 and 8-1. That wasn’t the case in this championship final. The third period remained a scoreless contest between the two teams, forcing the game into a five-minute 4-on-4 period of overtime.

The winning goal was scored with 1:36 remaining in overtime by the Titan’s Logan Bishop (Braden Gauthier). 

Both teams had advanced to the championship final after winning their respective pools during regionals, which also qualified them for provincials.

Yarmouth was the first team of regionals to qualify, defeating Central Kings 5-4 and West Kings 6-1.

NKEC had a 4-2 win over Barrington and a 6-2 win over Horton.

In the crossovers Central Kings defeated Barrington 5-2 and Horton had a 3-2 win over West Kings.

Central Kings and Horton met for the last game of regionals to compete for the last spot at provincials in these regionals. Central Kings won 3-1, with their last goal being scored on Horton’s empty net with 46 seconds remaining in the game.
