The captain of the CTV No Stars pulled out all the stops and pried the Graham Baxter trophy from the hands of Robert Morgan captain of Digby 911.

The No Stars beat the home team 10-8 in the 34th installment of the fundraiser hockey game that pits TV stars, camera operators, video technicians and the odd NHL star against local RCMP, firefighters and minor hockey coaches.

Lunney called in a few favours this year and called up Joe Dipenta who played 167 games for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the NHL – Dipenta won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007.

Lunney also signed Kevin Grant who played 15 years in the International Hockey League and was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the second round of the 1987 NHL entry draft.

Both Grant and Dipenta played defence; Dipenta had two assists and scored one goal on a penalty shot.

During a shoot out competition in the second intermission, no one came close to the bullseye, until Dipenta, shooting last, destroyed the target with his slap shot.

Digby firefighter Adam Sabean had the first goal of the night, assisted by fellow firefighter Drew Maclean just two minutes into the game.

The score remained close until the twelfth minute when the big guns hammered in three goals in 54 seconds and leapt ahead 4-2; a deficit the Digby 911 team would never make up.

For a while in the second period the visitors opened up a four-point lead but, used to emergencies, the 911 team kept cool and chipped away at the margin.

Digby pulled their goalie for the last minute but in the end, they reluctantly and graciously handed over the trophy to the visitors.

Rink manager Danny Harvieux says the crowd was the biggest he has seen at the CTV game in five years.

The door, 50/50 and raffle ticket sales raised $24,000 for the Clare Digby Minor Hockey Association – a little shy of the club’s goal of $40,000 but president Jonathan Ettinger is grateful.

“I am very pleased with the results – everybody worked really hard and made it a great day, “ he said. “It's my favorite day of the year: the smiling faces makes it all worthwhile.”

Ettinger says it’s gratifying how easy everyone is to work with and how willing everyone is to help out with the long-standing tradition.

“Our communities really jumped on board and really supported the association,” he said. “They are awesome and they know it's all for the kids. We’re going to make it even bigger and better next year.”

Ettinger says the club hopes to make up the other $16,000 with its monthly online 50/50 draw at 5050tickets.ca/cdmha.
