The 14-year-old Liverpool Regional High School student is finishing up his last season with the Major Bantum team, the Western Hurricanes.
“I’ve pretty much played every position except for goalie,” says Wilcox.
His love of hockey came from his family. His father has been building him a backyard rink for as long as he can remember, making his home a popular spot for friends looking to play a little scrimmage.
Every day Wilcox does something hockey related, whether it’s practice with his team, scrimmage on his backyard rink, or watching hockey with his big brother.
Wilcox can’t quite put his finger on what he loves about playing with the Hurricanes but he always wants to play the highest level of hockey he can.
“It’s fun to have a team, people who have your back and the camaraderie,” says Wilcox.
Most people wouldn’t say that being benched during a hockey game is their favourite memory but for Wilcox, it’s definitely a fond one. That was the day he realized just how intense major bantam hockey is.
“I got hurt during one our tournaments but I was watching (the Hurricanes) play one of the top teams in the league,” says Wilcox. “When you’re on the bench it’s different than in the stands, it’s really neat to see what the caliber of hockey really looks like.”
He says it takes a lot of mental will to play fast paced hockey like that.
“Sometimes you’re going to make mistakes and you’re going to have a hard time, you’ve got to not focus on that stuff,” says Wilcox.
Wilcox isn’t sure where he’ll go in hockey after his time with the Hurricanes but he might try out for the South Shore Mustangs.
“I definitely got a lot better and it was great to have experience with a higher level,” says Wilcox.
The Hurricanes play their last game of the season on Feb. 21 at Queens Place Emera Centre at 3:30 p.m. The Hurricanes face off against the Scotsburn Crushers.
