Some former local hockey players have been selected to represent the province on Team Nova Scotia during the Canada Winter Games that are being held in Halifax in February.
Ryan Graves of Yarmouth and Brendan Nickerson of Barrington are members of the major midget Mustangs team in Bridgewater this season. Last season both played bantam AAA hockey for the Yarmouth Mariners.
Both were selected for Team Nova Scotia after being invited to three identification camps and then the Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton in the under-16 male division.
“I was happy,” says Graves, about being chosen for the team. Last year Graves was named the top defencemen for the year in the Irving Mainland Bantam AAA League.
Nickerson, who also plays defence, was also excited about being selected for the team.
“I felt confident in myself. I just had to work hard and it paid off,” he says. “It was a goal accomplished because last year I tried out and never made it. So it’s a big goal that’s been achieved.”
The Canada Winter Games will be held in Halifax Feb. 11-27. Men’s hockey will be co-hosted at the Halifax Metro Centre and Dartmouth Sportsplex during the first week of the games, while women’s hockey will take place at the same venues during the second week of the games.
Nickerson notes that having the games in Halifax is almost akin to a “home game.”
“It’ll be good fan-wise,” he says. “There should be a lot of support there.”
Prior to the games in February, Team Nova Scotia will play some exhibition games at the end of this month. On Dec. 28 Nova Scotia will play New Brunswick at the Halifax Metro Centre at 7:30 p.m. On Dec. 29 the teams will play again at 4:30 p.m. at the Dartmouth Sportsplex.
Men’s hockey has been part of every Canada Winter Games since the inaugural games were held in Quebec City in 1967. Women’s hockey was brought into the fold when the games were held in Prince Edward Island in 1991.
Selected to play on the women’s 2011 Nova Scotia Under-18 Canada Winter Games team is Sarah Robichaud of Weymouth. She is extremely proud to have been selected to represent her province.
“We’re a young squad and I have played with some of my teammates since I was 11 years old,” she says. “Now being a senior on the Canada Winter Games team I will use my past experiences, training and skill to make Nova Scotians proud.”
Robichaud is also no stranger to the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association, having played Atom A one and Peewee AAA rep hockey two years with the association. Robichaud has also played on Team Nova Scotia in Atlantic competitions for many years.
She now plays hockey at Ridley College in Ontario, where she attends school.
