As part of Hockey Canada’s 100th anniversary celebrations – Hockey Canada turned 100 on Dec. 4, 2014 – the Hockey Century Tour is visiting communities across the country with a trailer full of hockey memorabilia. Hockey Canada coaches are also involved in the tour.

The tour was in Digby on Thursday as part of stops here in southwestern Nova Scotia.

A trailer pulls out to 70 feet in length and when set up and holds a timeline wall showcasing the history of hockey in Canada, a video wall showing clips of defining moments in Hockey Canada history, a speaker’s corner video booth, a replica locker modeled after Canada’s locker room in Sochi, a bubble hockey table and more.

At stops of the tour, Hockey Canada also sets up an inflatable one-on-one ball hockey rink, and mini stick decorating station and several fan photo stations with Team Canada gear for fans to wear and pictures of Team Canada players.

During the tour stops, Hockey Canada coaches hold on-ice training sessions with minor hockey players. In Yarmouth there will be novice teams, atom rep teams and the peewee AAA team participating in the on-ice sessions. The timing is nice for the peewee AAA team, which will be competing at provincials beginning on March 26.

At each stop there is also a local hockey hero who is honoured. In Yarmouth Chris Newell will be recognized for his 15-plus years of volunteering with the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association. Newell has served as the association's ice scheduler, which is no easy task considering the number of rep and house teams within the association who require ice times for practices, games and the occassional tournaments. The ceremony honouring him is scheduled for 2 p.m.
