Hants County Jr. B hockey rivalry heats up

WINDSOR – After losing to the Valley Maple Leafs in overtime earlier this month, the East Hants Penguins were out for redemption Nov. 20.

Residents from both sides of the county came out to see the rivalry between the Valley Maple Leafs and East Hants Penguins heat up Friday night.

It was a close match for the first two periods, with the Leafs holding a 1-0 lead after the first and then tied 2-2 after the second.

It was in the latter stages of the third period that the Penguins found their groove and downed their rivals 5-3.

Scoring for the Leafs were Alexander Shaw (power-play), Isaac Bridge and Peter Lister (power-play). Cole MacDonell recorded a hat trick for the Penguins, scoring three times. Matthew Shackell and Shaun McEachern also scored for the East Hants squad.

Despite making some key saves early on in the game, Connor Morrison had a rough third period and was tagged with the loss. He stopped 18 of 23 shots on net. The Penguins' Jason Ellis recorded the win, stopping 24 of 27 shots.

The Leafs will return to action this Sunday when the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates come to town at 7 p.m. Also on Nov. 22, the Penguins will travel to the Trenton Arena to take on the Pictou County Scotians.
