DIGBY, N.S. - A program in Digby is opening the doors for anyone who loves to ice skate.

Bob Powell, recreation manager for the Digby Area Recreation Commission, said the Digby Arena has a supply of free skates for anyone needing a pair.

“We have 40 to 50 pairs of skates at the rink,” he said. “They are for anyone who needs them.”

Members of the community donate the skates, usually when people outgrow their equipment. Powell said if someone needs a pair of skates, they could take them and keep them for as long as necessary.

The supply of skates is located on a rack inside the rink. If someone isn’t able to find a pair that fit him or her, they are encouraged to ask a rink employee for assistance.

Meanwhile, Powell also wants to remind the public that the public ice skating sessions are free of charge, along with the youth pond hockey ice-time on Friday evenings.

Powell added that a Great Skate event in conjunction with the Canada 150 celebrations will be held on Dec. 10 at the Digby Arena. Public skating will take place along with other activities such as a magician show. The Great Skate starts at 2 p.m. and continues until 4 p.m.
