Coach Kevin Locke said the Digby squad has much more potential this year—“two hundred per cents more”—and although their defensive play broke down at time, the Mariners carried the play to Bridgetown.
Locke wasn’t upset at the defensive lapses. “It’s their first game,” he emphasized.
After the game ended, he headed to the dressing room holding two pucks to present to two players who scored their first ever goals.
The Mariners’ Riley LeBlanc, assisted by Ryan Connell, opened the scoring at 6:39 of the first period. The Trojans responded just over two minutes later, but the tie was brief. Ryan Doucette notched his first of two on the day at 2:09, with LeBlanc picking up the assist.
Braden Trimper scored both Digby goals in the second period, assisted on the first by Brandon Sullivan, who finished the game with three assists, and a commendation by his coach as a player to watch.
Trimper’s second goal was assisted by Dawson Acker, who went on to score a third period goal, along with Doucette and John Law. LeBlanc recorded his second assist of the game on Law’s goal.
Bridgetown scored a goal in each of the first two frames, the second while Digby was shorthanded. The Trojans got a pair—the first and the fourth—from Kyle Taylor, and Brent Saunders and Caleb Medicroft got singles.
The Trojans never looked out of the game, despite the three-goal deficit at the end, and much of the Mariners’ success can be attributed to stellar play by goalie Ryan Robicheau, who came up big several times.
