The tournament was won by Avon View High School in Windsor, while the Northeast Kings Education Centre came second.

Coach Cailyn Byers said her team players have proved themselves able to keep their heads and be very sportsman-like this year.

“It’s the same girls as last year,” she said. “We only have four new players.”

Last year the Canning girls struggled to win. After Central Kings dropped off the schedule with a loss, a tie and a win, the Berwick area moms organizing the tournament were rooting for NKEC.

Ann Dort said many of the small home team started out playing ringette, which offers the basic skating skills required for hockey.

“They play ringette for two or three years, even the boys, and learn beautiful skills,” said Anna Ashford-Morton.

The organizers said they start early in the fall rounding up sponsors for the annual tournament. Dort credited local businesses and professionals for their support. Proceeds from the tournament are used for transportation costs for the CK team.

She said they were pleased to have several girls’ teams come a distance to take part. They stayed in Greenwich and Kingston.
