The win means the girls' team will be competing at provincials at the end of the month.
Avon View dominated the visitors March 2, with Sam Lake scoring in the first and second periods to give the hometown team a 2-0 advantage.
Park View seemed fired up at the start of the third period and managed to tally a marker early on. With about two minutes remaining in the game, the Panthers pulled their goalie but couldn't capitalize and Alisha Burns potted an empty net goal to secure a 3-1 victory.
Assisting on the Avalanche's goals were Haley Williams, Zoe Miller and Maddie Phillips.
The win means the girls were crowned the Western Region Division 1 hockey champions and will be heading to Antigonish for provincials.
Lake and Miller, the co-captains for the Avalanche, were ecstatic following the win.
“Three years ago, we were getting beat 15-nothing, 16-nothing and... now we're regional champions so that's kind of exciting,” said Miller.
It's the first time the Avon View girls have won a regional hockey banner.
“Girls hockey is... not as popular as other things but now we have a bunch of people coming out to watch us play and the fan support was awesome,” said Lake.
Miller said the team realized what was on the line when Park View's Lady Panthers bested goalie Mackenzie Leighton.
“When they scored that goal it kind of kicked in that we had a chance of losing it. We all came back together,” said Miller.
“We worked as a team and really made sure we did the little things that we needed to in order to win – get the puck in deep and play the time out,” Lake added.
Avon View won the first game in the playoff series 4-1.
The girls will be in Antigonish March 27-29 for a chance at taking home the provincial banner.
