Avon River Rats split pair of weekend games, remain in first place

WINDSOR, N.S. — The Avon River Rats, who are sitting in first place in the Nova Scotia Regional Junior Hockey League, have three final games to play prior to the Christmas break.

They split a pair of weekend games Dec. 2-3.

On Dec. 3, the River Rats won their 14th game of the season in Truro. They recorded a 6-4 victory over the Cumberland-Colchester Colts. The River Rats trailed for the majority of the first two periods before exploding with three unanswered goals in the final period.

The Colts led 1-0 after the opening frame. Stuart Whidden and Tyler Dixon both scored in the second period to put the Rats up 2-1. The Colts quickly came back with a pair of markers to take a 3-2 lead. Devon Pennell tied it for the visitors before the Colts scored again to take a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.

The third period opened with Logan Cleveland tying the game 4-4. Peter MacDougal scored the game winner with under five minutes to play and then Whidden added his second goal of the evening with less than a minute to play to make the final 6-4.

 

Metro 6 , Avon 2

The early part of the River Rats' game in Halifax on Dec. 2 went fine for the River Rats as they held a 2-0 lead 48 seconds into the second period.

Mitchell Urquhart scored on the power-play in the first period, and Cleveland scored early in the second before the Rats gave up six consecutive goals. They fell to the Metro Jaguars 6-2 despite outshooting the home team 31-26.

 

Upcoming games

The River Rats are now 14-3-1 on the season for 29 points. They’re currently eight points ahead of the second place Spryfield Attack.

The River Rats will close out the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule with three games. They take on the Eastern Shore Thunder on Dec. 10 and a play at home on Dec. 11 against the Metro Jaguars at 7 p.m.

Their final game prior to the break will be Dec. 18 against the Cumberland-Colchester Colts at 7 p.m. at Hants Exhibition Arena.
