A Valley girl is going places with her hockey career – including Europe.
Maggy Burbidge of Falmouth is a member of the Acadia Peewee AAA hockey team. She is also turning heads in female hockey circles, already attracting attention from prep schools in the U.S.
Maggy, who turned 13 on Jan. 13, is a Grade 7 student at Newbridge Academy in Sackville, where she is also enrolled in the Advanced Hockey program.
Her mother, Alana, describes Newbridge, a relatively new school, as “a great fit” for her daughter, “both academically and athletically.”
Maggy was selected to attend a tryout camp in Saco, ME to compete for a spot on the East Coast Selects Q team, along with more than 70 other girls from the Atlantic provinces, Quebec and the eastern U.S., from Maine to New York State.
The camp was held Jan. 1, and before the end of that week, Maggy received word she had made the team as a forward, one of only three girls from Atlantic Canada to be selected.
Maggy and her teammates will be travelling to Europe in late April. They will first take part in a two-day training camp in Sweden, then will travel by cruise ship to Finland to participate in the World Selects Invitational tournament.
The trip will run from April 25 to May 4.
“She’s pretty excited,” Alana says of her daughter. “She’s really looking forward to the experience; excited and nervous at the same time.”
The tournament will include teams comparable to the East Coast Selects from Western and Central North America as well as from Italy, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Russia and Slovakia.
Prior to the actual tournament, an exhibition game is scheduled where “they will mix up the teams and the girls will get to play with and against each other,” Alana said. Along with the hockey, it will be “a chance to exchange jerseys and pins,” and get to know each other.
The other two Atlantic Canada girls chosen to the team are Ella MacLean, a defenseman from Antigonish, and Tayah Sommers, a goalie from Fredericton.
The World Selects tournament is the first of four the East Coast Selects will take part in this spring and summer. The others are the Sherbrooke Invitational in Quebec; the Beantown classic in Boston; and the North American Prospects Showcase in Buffalo, NY. Maggy has also been invited to attend the Prep Prospects Showcase in Bedford, MA in May.
Maggy credits her minor hockey coaches the past three years, Laurie Dauphinee and Jamie Henderson, and her current coaches, Darren Burns and John Verran, for giving her “positive coaching and development. They’ve all been awesome,” she says, “and have helped me get where I am today.”
