AMHA serves more than 560 players between the ages of four and18 years of age in Eastern Kings County icing 26 teams during the 2015-16 season. The year-end gala offered an opportunity to thank the countless volunteers and community supporters, as well as the Acadia Axemen varsity team who helped make the season possible. The event showcased three-on-three cross-ice hockey and the presentation of the annual team awards. A freewill offering at the door help to raise money for the AMHA player assistance fund that supports players with financial challenges.
The AMHA Heart and Hustle awards are presented to the players who exemplifies dedication to teamwork, demonstrates a positive attitude on and off the ice, who always gives their best efforts in both practices and games and who shows a true love of the game of hockey. The 2015-16 winners were:
Atom: Noah Burke, Branson Keddy, Zackary Angermann, Jasper Fitch
Peewee: Jack Falconer, Danny Chisholm, Andrew Shirritt, Aidan Selfridge, Liam Sarsfield
Sledge: Colin Bowker
Bantam: Mitchel Vaughan, Austin Smeltzer, Curtis Davidson, Brendan Woolaver
Midget: Mike Frail, Evan Corkum, Lochlin Currie, Kyle Pottie
The Canning Schooners old-timers’ hockey team present the Jack Spindler Memorial Awards for a combination of sportsmanship and passion for the game as exemplified by their former teammate the late Jack Spindler. The Spindler awards are presented annually to one player in the Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget division. Winners were Cameron Henderson (Atom) , Luke Easton (Peewee), Kohl Bates (Bantam ) and Andrew Parsons (Midget).
The Dickie Moore Memorial Award is presented to a Midget A player in memory of former Kentville Minor Hockey player Richard (Dickie) Moore Jr., who passed away tragically in 1970 at age 16, to recognize outstanding sportsmanship and playing ability. This year’s winner was Riley Hardy.
The George Dimock Memorial Award, presented annually to the MVP of the Midget A team in memory of George Dimock, who, prior to his death in 1973, enjoyed a lifelong passion for hockey. He was a talented player, a coach and a dedicated volunteer in the Canning area, and a member of the original building committee for the Glooscap Arena. This year’s Dimock Award went to Brendan Haughn.
