Wolfville’s Axemen downed the Saint Mary’s Huskies 3-0 at the Halifax Forum March 8 in Game 2 of a best-of-three AUS consolation series that would earn the winner a chance to compete for the 2017 University Cup.

“Our guys were extremely well focused for this series. I thought the players played unbelievable,” said Axemen hockey head coach Darren Burns.

“The whole team was completely dialed in and focused and ready to go.”

Goaltender Robert Steeves recorded the shutout for Acadia, while Boston Leier, Geoff Schemitsch and Stephen Harper scored the Axemen’s goals.

Acadia clinched back-to-back wins against SMU to take the consolation series in two games.

“I’m really, really proud of the group,” said Burns, adding that he’s been involved in sports for a long time and he’d be hard pressed to find a group he’s more proud of.

Acadia will join fellow AUS teams the UNB Varsity Reds and StFX X-men in travelling to Fredericton, N.B. to compete for the University Cup March 16-19.

“When you go up there you’ve got to be completely dialed in and the further you go it’s another 10 or 15 per cent that you need,” said Burns.

“It’s a one-game showdown. It doesn’t get more urgent than that.”
