GREENWICH - Horton students are good at golf and they have the banners to prove it.

At the recent NSSAF Western Region golf championships played at West Pubnico, Horton teams swept the boys’ and girls’ regional banners.

The Horton boys’ team of Brandon Zwicker, Drake Batherson, Ian McLean and Dean Vial finished with a combined score of 245, good for an eight-stroke lead over second-place Central Kings.

In the boys’ division, the top three scores from each team counted toward the team championship.

Northeast Kings Education centre was third overall with a score of 261, four strokes better than Park View.

The top four teams and the top five individuals qualified for provincials scheduled for Oct. 6 at the LePortage club in Cheticamp.

Batherson (77), Matthew Chandler of Forest Heights (78), Josh Chaytor of Park View (79), Liam Carmichael of NKEC (81) and Brandon Power of Bridgetown (82) had the top five individual scores.

On the girls’ side, the Horton team of Darcy Fuller, Meghan McLean and Heather McLean finished with a combined score of 165.

The top two scores on each girls’ team counted toward the team championship. This was a moot point, as Horton was the only school with enough golfers for a team.

The girls’ individual results saw Allison Chandler of Park View lead the way with a score of 81, Meghan McLean was right behind at 82, and Darcy Fuller was third at 83, accounting for Horton’s 165 team total.

Heather McLean finished with a score of 91 and Natalie Rippey of Avon View was at 103. All five girls qualified for provincials this coming weekend.
