The football Griffins defeated the Cole Harbour Cavalliers 26-16 Nov. 14 at Acadia's Raymond Field to advance to the NSSAF Division One Tier Two provincial football championship.
Quarterback Caleb Melanson threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Griffins in the second quarter, while running back Jayden Simmonds also found the end zone early in the third quarter.
Horton opened the scoring with a safety just under five minutes into the game, and added their final two points on a second safety in the fourth quarter.
Head coach Steve Melanson was impressed by his team's defensive effort against a potent Cole Harbour offence.
"That team put up 46 points against J.L.
Melanson had praise for several players after the game including his quarterback, running back and the entire offensive line. In particular, the coach lauded Callum Shaw, who played defensive tackle and fullback, for his willingness to step up and take on new responsabilities.
"This was the first time he ever played fullback," says Melanson. "We practised this week, and he did it without hesitation."
Simmonds says hard work from all of his teammates got Horton the win.
"Blocks were perfect," says Simmonds. "Everything came together."
Horton advances to the provincial final on Nov. 19 at Huskies Stadium at Saint Mary's University in Halifax against Halifax West. Kick off is at 1 p.m.
