DRHS senior mixed curling team headed to provincials

DIGBY – The DRHS mixed seniors curling team is headed to provincials thanks to a supportive community here in Digby.

The team of six players and a coach needed $1,200 to pay for rooms and other expenses during the three-day tournament in Truro, March 26 to 28.

And they raised that with some Pizza Delight fundraising, donations from the school and Fairway Insurance, and a curling tournament this past weekend.

Twelve teams of four signed up for the funspiel.

After each end, players drew a piece of paper from a hat, which told them how the end would be scored. For example, the paper might say to count the most stones in the four-foot ring or it might say, most guards, or even most stones out of play.

And to make things even more mixed up, points in the tournament were determined, not by wins, but by points scored in each game.

So far example, it was better to lose 9-6 than it was to win 2-1.

Matti Carter, Shanay Bent and Ian Lewis, with guest appearances by Zachery Robinson and Bailey Ross were the winners.

Jim Gaunce’s Digby Fire Department team came second and Pat Nixon’s team came third.

The DRHS Mariners senior mixed team is made up of skip Bailey Ross, third Matti Goodwin, second Zachery Robinson, lead Hannah Pothier and alternates Christ Getchell and Addie Hersey.

Their coach is David McNutt.
