Only the top four teams in the NSIBL will advance to the tourney, which will be held the last weekend in August, and only the top three teams will advance to the Nova Scotia Triple A Intermediate Baseball Championship, which is held over the Labour Day weekend.
The Shamrocks went 3-1 on the weekend, winning their first two games Aug. 8 by forfeit over the expansion Pictou County Royals.
Sunday afternoon was a different story in Hantsport as the Shamrocks and Noel Road Blue Jays split a twin-bill, winning the opener 3-1 before losing the second one 11-4.
In the opener, Sean Croft drove in a pair of runs and tripled to lead his team in the victory. Pitcher Matt Lloy baffled several Blue Jay hitters, allowing only seven hits and a single run in going the distance.
The second game was a different story as the Shamrocks started Steve Best and he had his first difficult outing of the season. He allowed two runs in three innings before David Pilat was brought in for relief. Pilat also suffered his first sound defeat as he gave up nine runs in two innings. The game was called after five innings, with Noel Road winning 11-4.
On Aug. 8, the Blue Jays played a couple of excellent ball games against the first place Yarmouth Gateways, winning one and losing one.
The Blue Jays were victorious in the opener, winning 4-2, before falling 3-2 in the second game.
In another Saturday doubleheader, this time in Windsor, the Pictou County Albions moved to within two points of the fifth place Knights. The Albions registered 9-6 and 1-0 victories.
The 9-6 victory took 10 innings to determine, as Windsor put up a good fight.
Dave Swindall pitched nearly the entire game, with Mike Johnston coming in on relief in the 10th inning.
There are two weekends of baseball remaining. Teams will be attempting to get in as much baseball as they can prior to the league championship weekend in hopes of securing a top four position.
On tap for this weekend are four games that local baseball fans will want to keep an eye out for.
On Aug. 15, the Kennetcook Braves will be visiting the Pictou County Albions for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and the Noel Road Blue Jays will be travelling to Yarmouth for an afternoon doubleheader there.
On. Aug. 16, the Shamrocks will visit Kennetcook for a doubleheader, and the Pictou County Royals are slated to take on the Windsor Knights at the Tremain Crescent ball field at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
