Nova Scotia’s Provincial Selects team, which included Makayla Addington of Weymouth, finished fourth Sunday at the Baseball Canada Under-16 Girls Invitational championships in Saguenay, Que.
Nine teams from across Canada took part in the tournament that began Aug. 21. Quebec claiming the title with a 13-3 win over Ontario in the final Sunday night.
Nova Scotia went 3-3 in round-robin play, before losing the bronze medal game 10-1 to Manitoba.
Addington, who plays catcher and first baseman with the Weymouth Firebirds, said it would have been great to come home with a medal.
“Everyone played their best and I think we are all a bit disappointed we didn’t medal, but to finish fourth out of nine teams was a great record,” she said. “Being able to say that I was a part of an all-girls’ baseball team and played in a national tournament was amazing.”
Addington, the only player of the Selects from southwestern Nova Scotia, said she has travelled across Canada for bowling nationals, but playing in the baseball nationals goes beyond her previous experiences.
“I can’t compare my other trips to this,” Addington said. “Nationals has been an amazing experience.”
The Nova Scotia girls began the round-robin match-ups with a 17-2 loss to Ontario in the first game of the championships early Thursday morning.
The Selects played a strong two and a half innings and trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the third inning before the Ontario bats came alive for 13 unanswered runs to end the game.
Maria Roy and Raelea Nickerson scored the two Nova Scotia runs.
In their second game Thursday afternoon, the Selects came away 16-0 winners over Saskatchewan. Nova Scotia scored four runs in the first inning, 11 in the second and one in the third.
Winning pitcher was Hannah Shea. Maria Roy and Raelea Nickerson both scored three runs while Jenna Jackson, Rachel Boone, Katie Hagen and Mackenzie Dimmell added two runs each. Addington and Brooke Mingo each contributed one run for the victory.
The Selects continued their winning ways taking down the Quebec-2 team 11-1 in six innings in the Friday morning matchup.
Maria Roy was the winning pitcher and scored a run while Jackson, Boone and Raelea Nickerson added three runs apiece. Claudia Fulton scored a run to top off the win.
Nova Scotia clinched its semi-final spot with a 17-1 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador on Saturday afternoon.
The team led 7-1 after four innings before blowing open the game with a 10-run fifth inning to close out the game. Katie Hagen was the winning pitcher and scored two runs in the game.
Jackson, Nickerson and Roy scored three runs apiece while Mingo and Dimmell added two runs each.
Boone and Fulton were good for one run each.
Nova Scotia finished round-robin play in second place and took on Quebec in the crossover semi-final game, losing out 13-3.
The Selects held a 3-1 lead before Quebec scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Maria Roy scored two runs while Nickerson added a single run in the loss.
