It has been seven years since a Newport peewee fastball team has captured a Nova Scotia championship title but such was the case recently in Antigonish as the West Hants Thunder had perfect 5-0 record in the provincial tournament. They now advance to the Eastern Canadian Championship Tournament in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Aug. 22-25.
The N.B. tournament will feature two teams from Nova Scotia, two from Ontario, two from Newfoundland and two from the host province.
Head Coach Shane Rogers told the Journal that if the team can “go into the tournament with their attitudes all straight and playing level headed ball,” then he was confident Newport could bring home a medal.
Six ball players are in their final season in the peewee division: Brendan Smith, Brendan Walker, Nathan Lake, Sam Nunn, Dylan Hennigar and Tyrell Beals.
The six were all part of the team that finished in last place in the Eastern Canadian Championship in Newfoundland last summer. However, Rogers is confidant a great deal was learned last summer and the six are more hungrier and better ball players this season.
Anthony Anderson has been pitching above average for Newport, pitching both critical wins over Colchester County in the recent provincial championship. In the opening round-robin tournament game, the teams see-sawed with the lead back and forth with Colchester County going ahead 6-5 in the eighth inning before Newport rallied to win in the bottom of the eighth.
In the championship game, Newport outlasted Colchester 6-5 with Anderson showing impeccable control with his pitches.
In earlier tournament play, Newport blasted Antigonish 13-3, East Hants 15-4 and Cape Breton 16-3.
Newport will still have to be weary of Colchester as the Brookfield-based team scored a pair of victories in an exhibition doubleheader Aug. 11 in St. Croix. They won by scores of 9-5 and 6-4. Colchester will be the second Nova Scotia team to compete in Fredericton.
