HANTS COUNTY, N.S. — The Avon View Avalanche’s girls’ softball team are now 15-3 for the 2018 season following a highly successful tournament they hosted in St. Croix May 13-14.

The Avalanche won six consecutive games to improve to 15-3 on the season and were set to finish their final regular season May 16-17 with a doubleheader in Horton and a single game at Northeast Kings Education Centre.

They will head to the NSSAF Western Regional Championship Tournament in Yarmouth May 25-26.

As for the impressive invitational tournament they hosted, the Avalanche had a thrilling 10-8 win over Middleton in the gold medal championship game.

It was a game that featured several anomalies, such as Middleton leaving 16 runners stranded on base through seven innings, including the bases full in the first, second and sixth innings, and two on base in the third, fifth and seventh innings. Middleton committed six errors to the Avalanche’s two while the Avalanche scored eight of their 10 runs in the opening two innings.

The Avalanche’s Abby Miller connected for two RBI-two run double and a single over the opening two innings.

When Avon View scored five times in the second inning, they did it on four hits after a pair of walks followed by three base hits and Miller’s double.

Their infield made a number of heads-up plays in knowing where Middleton runners were and throwing the ball concisely and correctly to cut down on runs scoring.

In earlier play, the Avalanche defeated Middleton 5-2 after rallying from a 2-0 deficit and scoring five runs in the sixth inning.

The Avalanche showed plenty of offense in a 13-4 verdict over Central Kings as the Avalanche scored four times in both the first and second innings with Macie Johnston scoring three runs for the Avalanche.

As they continued to roll, they blanked Horton 8-0, with Jenna MacDonald reaching base all three times while also scoring two runs. Haley Rafuse also plated a pair of runs.

They sideswiped Northeast Kings 14-3, with Emma Lawrence reaching base all three times and scoring a pair of runs.

In their other preliminary round games at their tournament, Avon View thumped North Nova, from Pictou County, 17-6 with a five-run inning in the first while scoring four more in the fifth. Maddie Swinamer and Rafuse scored three runs apiece for the Avalanche.
