WINDSOR, N.S. — The Avon River Rats are facing a heavy schedule of games the weekend of Dec. 1-3.
They will be playing a pair of games against the weak Cumberland-Colchester Colts (Dec. 1 in Truro and Dec. 3 in Windsor) and a huge game on Dec. 2 against the first place Spryfield Attack — a team they have defeated twice this season, once in overtime.
Heading into weekend play, the River Rats trail the Eastern Shore Thunder by two points for second place and the Attack by seven points for first place.
To date, the River Rats cannot seem to find a consistent rhythm required to move up in the standings.
On Nov. 25 they dropped a 2-1 game to the East Hants Ryson Construction Penguins, a team that has a 4-12-0 record.
The teams were scoreless after the first period and the Penguins led 1-0 after 40 minutes.
The teams exchanged goals in the final period, with Logan Cleveland scoring on the power-play for the River Rats. The Penguins outshot the Rats 43-20 in the afternoon game in Lantz.
The previous evening in Truro, the River Rats destroyed the Cumberland-Colchester Colts 11-1.
Cleveland, Tyler Dixon, Will Trenholm, Alex King and Devon Pennell all scored a pair of goals for Avon, with a single marker going to Samuel Plourde.
In that Nov. 24 game, the River Rats demonstrated they were the better team by outshooting the Colts 70-20.
