WOLFVILLE - Acadia’s soccer teams are having no trouble finding the net.
The Axemen won their first game of the season 8-1 against the Mount Allison Mounties Sept. 7, followed by a convincing 3-1 win against host Saint Mary’s Sept. 9.
The home team opened the scoring against the Mounties with a goal off a hard strike from fourth-year midfielder Spencer Buck.
Acadia’s first goal was only the beginning to a four-goal half, including Buck’s second - an accurate shot from just less than 30 metres out. As a result of his two spectacular goals, Buck was named the Subway Player of Game.
Gordon McLaughlin and Zachary Visser each scored their first goals of the season to put Acadia up 4-0 at halftime.
The Mounties were unable to register a shot on goal until the 49th minute, when a cross from Alex Bennett was redirected by Hirokazu Hasegawa to bring the game within three.
Acadia responded with two goals of their own - one from rookie Joe Iatrou and another coming from McLaughlin.
Ten minutes after his first, Iatrou would add his second of the season - a vicious one-timer into the top right corner of the net.
With twelve minutes left in the game, Maxwell Guthrie gave the Axemen their eighth goal.
After compiling a seven-goal lead, the Axemen defence kept control of the ball to close out the rest of the game. Pietro Nottegar secured his first victory of the season, while Michael Cormier made 14 saves on the way to his team’s first loss.
Acadia’s season record improved to 2-0 with a 3-1 lead in Halifax Sept. 9 against the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
The Axemen host Moncton Sept. 14 at 7:15 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. home game against Memorial Sept. 16.
Axewomen start off on the right foot
The Acadia Axewomen shutout the Mount Allison Mounties in a 4-0 victory in their home opener Sept. 7 and handed the host Saint Mary’s Huskies a 6-0 loss Sept. 9.
In the home matchup versus the Mounties, Acadia found the scoreboard first off a well-timed header from Alexandra Scovil sent from a corner kick by Rachelle Aucoin.
Axewomen continued offensive pressure and kept the ball in the Mounties’ end, registering eight of their 19 shots in the first half.
Scovil would add another goal late in the 45th minute of the half to put the Axewomen up 2-0 at half-time.
Acadia forward Jenna Boudreau picked up her second assist of the game when teammate Annika Monroe sent her cross-crease pass into the net 59 minutes into the match.
Rookie midfielder Jessica Hunt scored in her debut game to put Acadia at a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Mounties’ goalkeeper Sophie Austin (Kanata, Ont.) made an impressive 15 saves on an Acadia offense that did not let up all game. Acadia’s Sarah Charnock registered a shutout in her first game of the season.
For her two-goal performance, Scovil was named the Subway Player of the Game, but credited her teammates for the victory.
“It was a really big team effort. Everyone was able to get in off the bench. We just have to keep pushing ourselves as a team and focus on the things we need to improve on, celebrate this win until midnight, and then start again,” said Scovil.
The Axewomen host Moncton Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. followed by a Sept. 16 game at 1 p.m. against visiting Memorial.
