The bonspiel began in 1977 as a curling event to bring together those in the Annapolis Valley working on farms, those in farming-related industries, and farming-related institutions.

It began with 12 teams and quickly grew to 18 teams representing a wider geographical area. Eighteen teams competed in this year’s 40th annual Farmers’ Bonspiel.

The opening ceremonies featured the 18 teams being piped onto the ice sheet by piper George Macintosh, with introductory and welcoming remarks by Premier Stephen McNeil, and the ceremonial first stone delivered by one of the bonspiel’s long time organizers, Derek Woodbury.

By 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon it was all over, scores tallied, and prizes award. First place went to the ‘Troop Team’ comprised of Peter Smith (lead), Cody Spidle (mate), Les Smith (skip), and John Troop (second). Blueline New Holland Industries, represented by Mike McCorry, supplied the first-place prizes.

Second place was awarded to the ‘Neily Team’ comprised of Emily Neily, Katie Chute, Will Neily, and Jonathon Crouse.
