Two Paragon golfers are at the top of the field of 151 golfers going into the second round of the MCT Insurance Amateur Championship at Digby Pines.
Gerry MacMillan has a two-stroke lead over Lingan’s Bill Burns after the Aug. 6 first round.
Tom Banks, of Auburn, is tied for third.
After winning back-to-back senior championships in 2011 and 2012, Kingston’s MacMillan finished in a tie for second at Greenwood last year.
"I had a great drive on my first hole (#10), and put my second shot inside of ten feet and made the putt so I had a real good start to get my round going" said MacMillan of yesterday’s play. From there, MacMillan would make four bogeys to go along with four birdies, finishing two under on the back nine and even par on the front.
The course had been soaked with rain in the days leading up to the event, but MacMillan said that he was impressed with the course all things considered.
"I came up for a round last week and it was a struggle to find a dry piece of fairway and I was thinking this tournament may be tough to get in, but I was pleasantly surprised with the fairways, anything in the short grass was fine, and I think we only had to move the ball twice during the round,” he said.
Heading into today’s play, MacMillan said he hopes to stay in the same rhythm "I got into a nice good rhythm today, and the last couple years I have struggled with having rocky starts.
“I have a good feeling about the way I am playing, how I am swinging the club, so I just need to take it nice and easy and hopefully build on that, I am looking forward to the next two days."
Ken-Wo’s Adrian deGraaf is tied for seventh.
