On Saturday, Aug. 16, River Hills Golf & Country Club played host to a record number of golfers for the 11th Annual Lockeport Open.

This scramble format tournament saw 19 teams take to the course at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start.  There were 76 golfers took part, which is two dozen more than the previous tournament record of 52 people.

As a special feature this year, the tournament was also used as a fundraiser to support community efforts to make Kids Corner Pre-school sustainable on a long-term basis.  Various businesses came on board with support for the program by sponsoring each individual hole on the course during the tournament.  Other businesses contributed as tournament sponsors.

Aaron Swim was the winner of the Long Drive contest on the eighth hole, while Mike Kendall had the shortest drive on the same hole.  Closest to the Hole Contest winners were: Bryce Crosby on Hole #9; Bob Malloy on Hole #10; and Mike Scott on Hole #18.

It has long been a tradition with this tournament to set aside a large portion of the entry fees for the winning team to donate to a local charity.  This year the team of  Amos Campbell, Nigel Campbell, Tim Dash and Matt King shot six under par to take top honours for the tournament and followed suit with the theme of the day by naming the “Friends of Kids Corner” as the recipient of $1000 on their behalf.

So when all was said and done the 2014 Lockeport Open could certainly be considered a success with 76 golfers enjoying a beautiful sunny day on the course.  A couple of individuals also contributed small donations to the pot, so Kids Corner Pre-school was the beneficiary of $3,570 plus a chance to make even more by selling tickets in the future.

Through this special project the following sponsors contributed a total of $2050 plus a table saw on which the Friends of Kids Corner will sell tickets in the future: RBC Royal Bank, Lockeport; Ocean Mist Cottages; Surf Lodge (MacLeod Group); Lockeport Pharmachoice; Jaycon Dev. Ltd. (Lenny Stuart); Roseway Chrysler; Huskilson’s Garage and Tide of Time Gallery & Gifts; Harlow Construction; Cotter’s Ocean Products; King Street Tim-br Mart; Lockeport Landing; Tyler Harris Excavating Ltd.; Allendale Electronics; Woodworkers Home Hardware; ‘Big Head’ Jourdie & Friends; ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ (Ed Sherin & Jane Alexander); Vernon d’Eon Fishing Supplies Ltd.; TLC Pharmasave; Lockeport Home Hardware; Town Market; Town & Country Diner; Shelburne Furniture; Tiffany’s Gifts; and Independent Fisheries.

Following the tournament in the clubhouse and just before the awards ceremony, Doug Stephens of MacLeod Group stepped forward and made a special presentation of an additional $500 for the “Friends of Kids Corner.” Community Coordinator, Frances Scott accepted this cheque on behalf of the group.
