A local running event turned 30 this year and almost 190 people helped celebrate by toeing the line for the 2014 Sheila Poole 10K.

The race started at 9 a.m. at Frost Park, the participants heading north along Water Street on a course that eventually finished back on Water Street at Rudder’s.

Matthew White, 34, of Dartmouth was the first to reach the finish line, covering the 10-kilometre route in 35:02, with Yarmouth County’s Bryan Hipson, 48, second in 35:12.

Denise Robson, 45, a Dartmouth resident formerly of Yarmouth, won another women’s title, this time in 37:38.

The Sheila Poole 10K began in 1985 as the Human Race. It was renamed in the late 1990s in memory of Poole, a local runner and former Human Race champion, who died of cancer in 1997 at the age of 35.
