Street hockey anyone?
The Jumpstart Street Hockey Tournament will take place on Saturday, June 21, and organizers are looking for teams to register.
The tournament will be held in the Mariners Centre parking lot. It’ll begin at 9 a.m. and run all day, rain or shine.
The deadline to register is Monday, June 16.
The divisions in the tournament are:
• Novice (born in 2006-2005)
• Atom (born in 2004-2003)
• Peewee (born in 2002-2001)
• Bantam (born in 2000-1999)
Each participant must bring a caged hockey helmet, hockey gloves, a hockey stick, sneakers, a water bottle and sunscreen. Each team also provides their goalie gear.
Elbow pads, a jock or jill and shin pads are also recommended.
There will be four players and one goalie on the hockey “arena” during games, but teams can be made up of more players so they can sub players during the games. A parent or guardian is also asked to be present.
There is a $10 cost per player.
Last year this event was held in July, coinciding with Jody Shelley Day. The organizers said then they hoped to see this tournament become an annual event.
Last year’s tournament saw 20 teams take part with 150 players from Yarmouth and Shelburne counties and Clare participating. The tournament raised $1,500 for the Jumpstart program – a program affiliated with Canadian Tire that helps youth participate in organized sport and helps to equip programs with sports equipment.
To register for the tournament people can visit or contact: YMCA Yarmouth at 742-7181; Yarmouth Recreation at 742-8868; Argyle Recreation at 648-3379; Barrington Recreation at 637-2903; Clare Recreation at 769-3655; Lockeport Recreation at 656-2565 or Shelburne Recreation at 875-3544 ext. 225.
