Avon View's senior girls' rugby team has secured home advantage when they enter semi-finals next week.

The Avalanche defeated King's-Edgehill School 24-0 on May 20 to maintain the top spot. KES finished the first round of playdowns in second place, and will host the other semi-final game.

The rivals met on the KES pitch Tuesday, May 20 for an early evening bout that was full of energy.

“It was really back and forth. We capitalized on our chances and when they got close, we relaxed and didn't panic and held them out when we needed to,” said Jim Bryan, Avon View's head coach.

KES battled AV back to the goal line a number of times, but couldn't break through to score.

“The score was not indicative of the play,” Bryan said.

Scoring trys for the Avalanche were Holly Smith, Kasey McDermott, Natalie Rippey and Brittney MacKinnon.

Katie Giles recorded two converts.

Bryan said Smith, who made several long runs during the 24-0 win, has really come into her own.

“She's been hard to take down. She's really caught on,” said Bryan. “She's just zipping down the field.”

Semi-finals will be held this coming Tuesday, May 27.

Bryan said he hopes to see more community members come out and support the teams as they push to take home a championship banner.

“It's a pretty exciting game to watch,” said Bryan.
