Carol Klessens of Mavillette was one of the first brave Scallywag participants to wade into the water in 2012 at the first of the ocean bottom runs in Smith’s Cove.
The Smith’s Cove Fire Department is thinking about expanding the Scallywag Run into a weekend of events.
“We see this as a way to bring a little more activity into the village,” says Joan Ross, president of the Smith’s Cove Fire Commission. “We’d like to make it a bit more of a community event and include more people.”
The department has held the 8-kilometre Scallywag run the last two years with 75 to 80 runners and walkers heading out and around Bear Island at low tide.
The island is only accessible on foot for a few hours every day – the run takes participants from the firehall, down the beach, across a muddy wet sandbar, around the rocky shore of the island and back across the sandbar before the tide returns.
They have scheduled the 2014 Scallywag for Sunday, Aug. 24 with a 4 p.m. start.
Ross says the organizing committee has talked about adding a fire fighters bucket brigade competition on Saturday and possibly a fire truck parade through the local campgrounds.
They are considering a barbecue and bonfire and possibly a repeat of their recent successful music night.
“We talked about getting a flatbed to put the musicians on and maybe hold the show outside,” said Ross.
The fire department sets up a campground for the Wharf Rat Rally every year and Ross says they could set that up a little early and have it open for anyone who wanted to stay the weekend.
“These are just ideas at this point,” said Ross. “We’ve talked to some other fire departments and they’re interested. We have to see if the community is interested too.”
Ross says they’ll be looking for volunteers especially.
The fire department is planning a community meeting for 7 p.m. on Monday, March 24 at the Smith’s Cove Firehall.
Ross says they are hoping people with ideas, energy and especially a willingness to help, will attend.
