A series sweep was not to be for the Axemen hockey team.

After winning the first two games of the Atlantic University Sport semifinal series at home, Acadia lost game three 4-1 to the Aigles Bleus in Moncton Saturday night.

For the third game in a row, Moncton opened the scoring early, this time with a  goal from Samuel Groulx 21 seconds into the first period.

Mike Cazzola had the single Acadia goal a few minutes later on a five-on-three power play opportunity, with assists from Chris Owens and Brett Thompson.

Then the scoring was done until the third period when the Aigles Bleus banged in three goals for the win. Simon Belliveau, Alex Emond and Alex Noel scored for Moncton.

“This is avery tough league to win in," head coach Darren Burns said after the game.

“It was very tight checking," he said of the low-offence game. "Full credit to them.

“I don’t think we shot the puck enough tonight," he added. Shots on goal were relatively low for both teams: 23 for Acadia and 21 for Moncton.

Burns told kingscountynews.ca earlier in the series that defence would be key to success.

“We did a much better job (on defence)" tonight, he said. However, once Acadia was down 2-1, "we were under pressure to think we had to score goals.

"Their second goal was a real goalscorers' goal," the coach noted.

"There were a few odd man rushes in the third period and they capitalized."

Burns said he couldn't pinpoint the top player for the Axemen Saturday night, but was pleased with Evan Mosher's performance in goal

"He was good, he made big saves and kept us in the game."

Now it's “back to the drawing board" for game four, he said. “We've got a structure we played with all year and we don’t have to change a lot of things."

Game four is at 7 p.m. Sunday in Moncton. If a fifth game is needed, it will be Tuesday night in Wolfville.
