The Yarmouth Mariners’ 4-3 win over the Pictou Crushers on Friday, Feb. 21, helped moved the Mariners into third place in the Eastlink Division.

The team scored twice in the third period to capture the come-from-behind win over the Crushers.

The Mariners had been sitting in fourth place in the Eastlink Division for weeks. As the season winds down and playoffs approach, teams want to avoid that fourth-place spot in the division to avoid having to play a mini-series to get into the playoffs. That mini-series would be played against the Valley Wildcats.

The Mariners are two points ahead of Amherst now, 59 to 57.

The Mariners play Truro Saturday night on the road with the Ramblers hosting Dieppe Saturday night. Yarmouth and Amherst face off in Amherst on Sunday.

The following is the MHL game summary from Friday night’s Mariners win over the Crushers:

In the game Connor Donaghey led the Mariners with 2 goals while Morgan Messenger added 1 goal and 1 assist. Mitchell Shewfelt led the Crushers with 1 goal and 1 assist.

Shewfelt opened the scoring 49 seconds into the game to give the Crushers a very early 1-0 lead. Brandon Parsons scored at 11:40 to extend the lead to 2-0 after the first period. Tyler Doyle scored at 3:55 to increase the lead to 3-0. Donaghey (Messenger, Billy Hartley) scored at 4:57 to get the Mariners on the scoreboard at 3-1. In the second period Shawn Boudreau (powerplay, Zack Henry, Danny Wicks) scored at 12:42 to cut the lead to 3-2. It was the only scoring in the middle frame.

In the third period Messenger (powerplay, Colin Campbell, Justin Rasmussen) scored at 13:35 to tie the game at 3-3. Donaghey (game winner, second goal of game, Josh Desmond, Henry) scored the winning goal at 17:28.

Pictou pulled its goalie for the final 1:07 of the game but failed to find the equalizer.

Yarmouth went 2 for 4 on the powerplay while Pictou County went 0 for 4.
