Acadia fall sports teams had mixed results in pre-season play as they tuned up for the start of their respective regular seasons this weekend.
In their lone pre-season exhibition game, the football Axemen scored a 19-15 win over St. F.X. on Aug. 31 in Antigonish.
The Axemen touchdowns were scored by 2012 AUFC Rookie of the Year Thomas Troop on a three-yard run and Jordan Koch on a three-yard pass from fellow freshman Darcy Lavoie.
Ryan Begin added a 22-yard field goal, and Acadia also forced a two-point safety to round out their scoring.
The Axemen, the two-time defending AUFC champions, open the AUFC regular season Sept. 6 at Saint Mary’s. Acadia’s home opener is Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. against Laval.
Meanwhile, the Axewomen rugby team completed the pre-season with a record of three wins and two losses.
Following a 31-5 win over Sherbrooke in a friendly match Aug. 23 in Wolfville, the Axewomen travelled to Truro to take part in an invitational tournament Aug. 31- Sept. 1 that also featured Saint Mary’s, St. F.X., UPEI, Dal and McGill.
Acadia played four times, defeating Saint Mary’s 63-0 and McGill 22-15 and losing 15-7 to UPEI and 76-0 to powerful St. F.X.
The Axewomen open the regular season Sept. 6 at St. F.X., with the home opener set for Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. against Saint Mary’s.
The soccer Axewomen had a pair of pre-season contests,playing UPEI to a scoreless draw Aug. 31 in Charlottetown and dropping a 2-0 decision Sept. 1 in Moncton.
The Axemen soccer team played a pair of pre-season contests at UNB in Fredericton, playing to a 1-1 draw with Montreal Aug. 30 and losing 3-1 to UNB Aug. 31.
Both Acadia soccer teams open the regular season at home Sept. 6 against Mount Allison, with the women’s game at 5 p.m. and the men’s game following at 7:15, both on the turf at Raymond Field.
