A former Kings County man accused of first-degree murder was back in Kentville Provincial Court today.
The public defender representing Albert Rex Baird, 45, said his client is anxious to move forward. However, Ken Greer asked Judge Alan Tufts to put off setting dates for a preliminary inquiry for the Dartmouth man for another 30 days.
Greer cited issues surrounding disclosure and legal representation for the request.
He said he had just received a significant disclosure package Aug. 28, which he reviewed with Baird Aug. 30. Greer said there are “still significant gaps” in the disclosure received from the Crown, including a statement given by Baird in 2005. Crown attorney Robert Morrison said the “lion’s share” of disclosure had been made the previous week.
It’s likely another defence lawyer would be the solicitor of record for the case, Greer said.

Tufts said Baird has the right to choose his own lawyer and the first task is to get that lawyer in place. The judge added it is important to make sure disclosure is complete so dates for the preliminary inquiry can be set.
Judge Tufts put off the matter until Sept. 30, but cautioned that the spring dates currently available for the preliminary inquiry could be lost if the matter isn’t progressing.
During a July appearance, Tufts said it would be February 2014 before two weeks would be available.
Baird was arrested May 30 of this year and charged with the murder of Rhonda Joyce Louise Wilson in Sheffield Mills Aug. 7, 2002. The arrest was made in relation to the missing person’s investigation into Wilson’s whereabouts.
Wilson was Baird’s girlfriend at the time. He reported her missing Aug. 10.
