A barn fire near Villagedale destroyed thousands of dollars worth of tools, lobster traps and fishing gear as well as an all-terrain vehicle on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
Firefighters from four departments were dispatched to the Villagedale Road scene shortly after 5 p.m. and were greeted by an outbuilding that was fully involved.
Although there was initial concern for a nearby house, firefighters “were able to knock the fire down quick,” said Port Latour Fire Chief Troy Perry.
The fire chief noted that large coils of fishing rope stored in the barn burned furiously during the blaze.
“Rope burns hot and fast,” he noted.
Crews from Port Latour, Barrington, Port Clyde and Island and Barrington fire departments spent hours on the scene to ensure the fire did not spread.
The two-storey barn was completely destroyed and although it was expected to be difficult to determine what caused the fire, Chief Perry said there was nothing suspicious about its origin.
