Rescuing the deer.
Our Yarmouth Vanguard newsroom received these photos as a submission for the Trading Post. It was submitted by Barbara Blauvelt of Brazil Lake who said she didn’t realize that when she recently decided to take her grandson Gentry to Port Maitland Beach for a run in the sand on Aug. 17 that instead she would end up spearheading a rescue mission.
“We had walked about five minutes up the beach and you could hardly see 30 feet ahead when I noticed something in the water. At first I thought it was a baby whale, then I thought it was a shark. As we got closer I saw it was a young deer mired in the sand and the tide was rolling in fast,” she explained.
“I couldn’t go out and save it and leave Gentry on shore and I figured he had less than 10 minutes left so I ran five minutes back up the deserted beach - lugging Gentry - and finally flagged down a couple getting into their SUV, a few more having a picnic followed.”
As a result of everyone’s efforts the deer was saved.
“And yes that is our own Dr. Tom Muise enjoying his vacation,” Blauvelt said in her email.
